The Best Outdoor Patios in Downtown Chicago

When you’re looking for some summer sipping, the best place to be is outside. Chicago has some epic patios and rooftop bars that not only offer a great place for some al fresco dining, but also have some sweet beverage selections.

We’ve picked our favorite outdoor patios in downtown Chicago for your cocktailing fun this summer.

For amazing people watching and some tasty wines, grab a seat at City Winery on the Chicago Riverwalk. Boaters heading to and from Lake Michigan will tie up at the dock as you sip on their straight-from-the-barrel wines. They often have live music on the weekends, making for an idyllic way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Chicago’s nights are known to get a little chilly, but you can keep enjoying your cocktail outside when you visit III Forks. Tucked into Lakeshore East, the rooftop features heaters to go with your view of the landmark Aqua Building and a sculpted park surrounded by highrises. You’ll definitely want to indulge in some of their prime beef after sipping a classic negroni or a boulevardier.

When you sit on Seven Lions’ patio you’ll feel like you’re in the center of it all. Located on Michigan Avenue and across from the Art Institute of Chicago, this Alpana Singh-owned restaurant is prime spot for enjoying the energy of the city. You can even bring your furry friend, since the 48-seat patio is dog-friendly. While you can’t go wrong with the Master Sommelier’s wine choices, they’ve also got a hefty cocktail selection featuring drinks such as the 7L Old Fashioned, made with Buffalo Trace and amaro, and the Cool Hand Luke, a refreshing mix of Tito’s vodka, cucumber, and lime.

For the beer lovers, Howells and Hood is your happy place. With 360 taps pouring craft beer, ciders, and wine, they’ve got something for everyone. Because they’re located in the Tribune Tower, their gigantic patio gives you an amazing street level view of the Wrigley Building. If you’re not in the mood for a beer you can choose from one of five different takes on the Moscow Mule.
