December Events in the Chicago Loop

Chicago in December is certainly a festive time of year. It seems like the entire downtown gets into the holiday spirit, with lights strung everywhere and special events.

From a traditional German market to a lobby full of tubas, we’ve got some of the most exciting December events in the Loop.

Every year Daley Plaza becomes a holiday tradition as the Christkindlmarket sets up shop. Vendors from all over the world, many of them from Germany, head to Chicago to offer their handmade wares during the month of December. One of the most popular parts of this market is the German cuisine, from pretzels to schnitzels. Kids can get their photos with Santa, and be sure to keep an eye out for the Christkind, a lovely lady dressed in gold.

Goodman Theatre

Another beloved tradition in the Loop is the performance of “A Christmas Carol” at the Goodman Theatre. It’s the 40th year that the Charles Dickens takes the stage. If you miss this show, you’ll definitely be saying Bah Humbug.

Palmer House Hilton

The elegant and historic Palmer House Hilton becomes a bombastic celebration with Tuba Christmas. A concert of 400 tuba and euphonium players fill the Grand Ballroom with the sounds of the holidays. It’s the 44th year for this free event honoring music professor and creator Harvey Phillips. While you’re there, you won’t be able to miss the tree, made of 15,000 boughs and adorned with 7,000 lights.

Cloud Gate

One more favorite Chicago December tradition is Caroling at Cloud Gate. One of the newer holiday events, on select Fridays between Thanksgiving and Christmas various caroling groups gather at the base of Cloud Gate to sing the songs of the season. The final concert on December 15 will be presented by cast members from various Broadway in Chicago shows, so you know it will be theatrical.

These are a few of our favorite December events in the Loop. For even more festivities and fun, be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook.
