Downtown Chicago’s 4 Best Places for Sushi

When you’re in the mood for sushi, nothing else will do. It’s one of the most popular cuisines in Chicago, and you can get it from places as diverse as a high end restaurant or at your local grocery store. The Japanese delicacy is in such demand that you can even buy it at Walgreens. Downtown Chicago has several options to satisfy your craving for maki, nigiri, and sashimi, and here our are favorites.

One of the best sushi places in Chicago is actually a chain. Hot Woks Cool Sushi has four locations, two of which are in the Loop. Their Michigan Avenue spot is the perfect location to pick up a picnic before a concert in Millennium Park, and West Adams is great for anybody working in the Financial District. They’re known for their rolls, like the Black Dragon made with black rice, shrimp tempura, unagi, and avocado. If you want some variety they’ve got combinations that come with a bowl of miso soup.

Surf and turf lovers get the best of both worlds at Stetson’s Modern Steak + Sushi. Located in the Hyatt Regency, you can take the pedway the entire way there from Block 37 if the weather’s inclement. You can go for the standard sashimi options of hamachi and tuna, or try the marinated mackerel or rainbow maki. Other seafood options include a chilled bar with oysters, King Crab legs, and sashimi ceviche.

Another spot that showcases both land and sea is Roka Akor. The Chicago outpost of this Arizona transplant features a menu that offers prime steaks in addition to fresh fish. It’s so fresh it’s flown in daily. They make a point of creating dishes that are as beautiful as they are edible, making this a popular spot for Instagram foodies.

Grab a casual lunch or dinner at the BYOB Kai Sushi in the South Loop. Trader Joe’s and Jewel-Osco are nearby so you can pick up a bottle of sake or a six-pack of Sapporo to enjoy with your rolls, udon, and tempura. When it’s nice outside you can sit on their patio, and when it’s not you can order delivery.
