Find Your New Best Friend: 3 Amazing Places to Adopt a Pet in Chicago

You love your home. It’s comfortable, it’s in a great location, and it offers everything you need. Except, something’s missing. You know that Marquee at Block 37 is pet-friendly, and you’ve decided it’s time to give a furry a friend a home. If you’re looking for a companion to share your downtown adventures, here’s where to adopt a pet in Chicago.

Since 1899 The Anti-Cruelty Society has been in the forefront of animal welfare and pet rescue in Chicago, so they know a thing or two about pet adoption. They classify dogs and cats based on the type of environment they’re most suited for, from first time pet owners to those who are comfortable providing a home to a dog or cat with special needs. They suggest the process to find your perfect companion will take about two hours, and you may not find one on your first try. You’ll need to fill out an application, and fees range from $60 to $250.

You can also adopt a dog or a cat through the city of Chicago. Animal Care & Control provides all of its adoptable animals with a health evaluation, a microchip, vaccinations, and spay or neuter surgery. It costs $65 and you must bring a government-issued ID as well as a copy of your lease showing that pets are allowed.

PAWS Chicago was founded by a high school student and her mother to put an end to the euthanization of homeless and unwanted pets. Part of the way they do this is to offer adoption services. Everyone who wants to adopt is vetted based on living arrangements, time available to spend with your new friend, and interaction with your potential friend. Fees range from $25 for a cat that’s five years or older to $400 for a puppy six months and younger. Dog fees include a $100 deposit that’s refunded after obedience training has been completed within four months of adoption. Keep an eye on their calendar as they have weekend pet adoption events so you can find your new best friend.

You can find even more places to adopt a pet at the Puppy Mill project. They’ve got a list of programs throughout Chicago that find homes for animals in need.
